What is Expected of Foster Parents?

In consideration of the monthly financial reimbursement, this is an abbreviated list of the basic expectations that the state has of certified foster parents.

Foster Parents are expected to provide:

  1. In the Home - A neat, orderly environment in good repair; a family atmosphere of warmth and acceptance.
  2. Physical needs - Provide adequate clothing that is age appropriate and in good, clean condition. Provide balanced, nutritious meals three times a day; basic hygiene and personal needs (deodorant, shampoo, etc.)
  3. Health Needs - Annual and as-needed medical and dental check-ups. Health needs are to be met promptly. Ensure that the child is clean and provide the child with training in grooming and hygiene. Medical and dental expenses are covered by Medi-Cal.
  4. Transport - To court appearances, doctor and dentist visits, social activities, therapy appointments and visits with natural parents.
  5. Treatment of the Child - With the RJ worker, develop goals and encourage the child to reach those goals.
  6. Appropriate and Reasonable Discipline - Establish clear and appropriate limits; be consistent. No corporal punishment (spanking) is allowed.
  7. Supervision - 24-hour supervision is required for the foster child placed in your care. Alternate care can be arranged through Rancho Jireh.
  8. Coordination with school - Communicate with school staff and advocate for the child's needs. Attend meetings. Monitor schoolwork and behavior.
